The legend of Kuchisake-Onna

The legend of Kuchisake-Onna of JAPAN

The legend of Kuchisake-Onna, or the "Slit-Mouthed Woman," is a popular ghost story in Japan. The story goes that there was once a beautiful woman who lived in a small village. She was married to a samurai, but she had an affair with another man. When her husband found out, he became angry and punished her by slitting her mouth from ear to ear.

After her death, Kuchisake-Onna returned as a vengeful spirit, wearing a surgical mask to cover her disfigured mouth. She would approach children walking alone at night and ask them, "Am I pretty?" If the child said yes, she would remove her mask to reveal her mouth and ask again. If the child said no, she would kill them with a pair of scissors she carried with her.

The legend of Kuchisake-Onna has been passed down through generations in Japan, and it has been adapted into various forms of media, including films, manga, and anime. In modern times, the story has become a popular Halloween costume and makeup look, with people recreating the slit-mouthed look using special effects makeup.

Despite the story's popularity, it's important to remember that it is just a legend, and there is no evidence to suggest that Kuchisake-Onna actually existed. However, the story has had a lasting impact on Japanese culture and continues to be a popular subject of discussion and fascination.
