Jackie Robinson:
Jackie Robinson was the first African American player to play in Major League Baseball, and his entry into the league was a significant milestone in the civil rights movement. Robinson faced intense discrimination and racism, both from fans and from other players, and he was forced to endure a great deal of hardship in order to pave the way for future generations of Black athletes.
Jesse Owens:
Jesse Owens was a track and field athlete who competed in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. Despite the intense pressure he faced as a Black athlete competing in Nazi Germany, Owens won four gold medals and became a symbol of hope and perseverance for people all over the world.
Wilma Rudolph:
Wilma Rudolph was a track and field athlete who overcame incredible odds to become one of the greatest sprinters of all time. Rudolph was born prematurely and suffered from polio as a child, which left her with a limp and wearing a leg brace until the age of nine. Despite this, she went on to win three gold medals in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.
Pat Tillman:
Pat Tillman was a professional football player who left the NFL to join the United States Army after the 9/11 attacks. Tillman served several tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan before being killed in action in 2004. Tillman's sacrifice has become a symbol of the sacrifices made by many men and women who have served in the military.
Billie Jean King:
Billie Jean King was a tennis player who was a vocal advocate for women's rights and gender equality in sports. King helped to establish the Women's Tennis Association and was instrumental in the battle for equal prize money for male and female players. She also famously defeated Bobby Riggs in the "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match in 1973, which helped to shatter stereotypes about women's athletic ability.
