HOW A DOG BECAME A WORLD WAR II HERO ?

During World War II, there were many dogs who served alongside their human handlers in various capacities, but one of the most unique and remarkable stories is that of Sergeant Stubby.

Sergeant Stubby was a pit bull mix who was rescued off the streets of Connecticut by a young soldier named J. Robert Conroy in 1917.

 Conroy brought Stubby with him when he was sent to France to fight in World War I, and Stubby soon became a beloved mascot among the troops.

Stubby's keen sense of smell and hearing made him an ideal companion on the battlefield. He was able to alert his human companions to incoming artillery shells and even sniffed out a German spy in the trenches.

 He also served as a morale booster, comforting wounded soldiers and even participating in the occasional game of catch.

Over the course of his service, Stubby participated in 17 battles and was wounded twice. 

He was eventually promoted to the rank of sergeant and became the most decorated dog in U.S. military history. 

After the war, he returned home a hero and lived out the rest of his days with Conroy, who helped to train other war dogs.

Sergeant Stubby's story is a testament to the remarkable courage and loyalty of dogs, and his contributions to the war effort helped to inspire a generation of soldiers and civilians alike.
