Maradona's "Hand of God" goal (1986 World Cup) - During a quarterfinal match between Argentina and England, Diego Maradona punched the ball into the net with his left hand, but the goal was allowed to stand by the referee. Maradona later claimed that the goal was scored "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God."


Zinedine Zidane's headbutt (2006 World Cup final) - During extra time in the final between France and Italy, Zidane headbutted Italian defender Marco Materazzi in the chest, leading to his sending off. France went on to lose the match on penalties.


Luis Suarez biting incidents - Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez has been involved in three biting incidents during his career, the most high-profile of which occurred during the 2014 World Cup when he bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. Suarez was subsequently banned for four months from all football-related activity.


"The Battle of Santiago" (1962 World Cup) - During a match between Chile and Italy in the 1962 World Cup, the players engaged in a brutal and violent match that saw several players sent off and punches and kicks thrown.


Harald Schumacher's challenge on Patrick Battiston (1982 World Cup) - During a semifinal match between Germany and France, German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher collided with French defender Patrick Battiston, knocking him unconscious and breaking several of his teeth. Schumacher was not punished for the challenge.


The Handball Disallowed Goal of Frank Lampard (2010 World Cup) - During a round-of-16 match between England and Germany in the 2010 World Cup, England midfielder Frank Lampard hit a shot that clearly crossed the goal line but was not given by the officials. The goal would have tied the game at 2-2, but Germany went on to win 4-1.
